In 2022, Dr Daniel Cavanaugh lead a research project, along with Dr Cristy Cummings, Christopher Russo, LICSW, Kellie Pertl, Wen-Chen Liu, and Dr Will Dobud to explore pathways towards professionalism, training, and education in adventure therapy. In the survey, providers were asked where they studied adventure and outdoor therapy at the university level. While not an exhaustive list, these were the schools described by research participants to provide training.
