Supervision

Clinical Supervision

Supervision can be neglected. Requirements for the supervision of therapists and practitioners vary throughout the world, and at times, outdoor practitioners may not understand the benefits of supervision, conflating it with management, which should remain distinct from clinical or counselling supervision. One type of supervision is about your professional therapeutic work with clients, the other is about how you fit in with corporate culture and your prospects for ongoing employment. The difference is fundamental.

In a current research project, we found many outdoor therapy providers received supervision from supervisors new to outdoor therapy practice. Of course, seeking supervision from a person with varying theoretical worldviews can help us to bring in an outside perspective, though it can also be helpful to consult with someone experienced in navigating the delivery of therapeutic services in outdoor settings. Some of the Friends of the Centre can be booked for supervision through the centre, contact us if you would like us to help you get in touch with an appropriate supervisor.

Values for Supervision

The Outdoor Therapy Centre believes supervision should be:
  • Focused on client voice and client experience.
  • Data-driven - bring evidence about the client's experience of the service and perception of the therapeutic alliance to each session.
  • Aimed at helping the practitioner to improve their outdoor therapy practice.
  • Affordable, accessible, and anti-oppressive.
